Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. June 2, 2016 at Hibbett and Hailey Funeral Home in Donelson, TN. Interment will be at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Andrew Price Memorial UMC in July.
John was born in Lakeland, FL to Jennie and Elmer Gebhart on December 20, 1929. He married Evalyn Mary Huffman on June 17, 1956. He graduated from University of Miami, FL and received master’s degrees from University of Illinois and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. John served during the Korean Conflict in the Army Signal Corps and worked as an electrical engineer with Western Electric Co. and the National Institutes of Health prior to entering the ministry as a United Methodist pastor. He served churches in Florida and Tennessee, and he served as a chaplain in the Tennessee prison system for several years.
John is remembered for his love for God and his family, his quiet wit, his love of learning and music, and his focus in ministry with the poor, hungry, imprisoned, displaced, and marginalized. John is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Gebhart, and is survived by his wife, children Sally (Andy) Pardue, Perry (Jane) Gebhart, Lucy Gebhart, Amy (Michael) Curtis, eight grandchildren, and four nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Andrew Price Memorial United Methodist Church or the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).
