Buster was a great man and mentor. We had some great times rewatching his films. He was teaching me to write screenplays. Some of the best times of my life. Learning to paint. Learning to fly fish. You only have a few true friends in your life time. And he was definitely one of the best friends I had. Fly high old guy ❤

Went to  Ringling with Buster and shared a house with him and John Davis in "68.   What a nice guy!  He was instrumental in liberating the Golden Buda from the Sarasota restaurant of the same name... solid concrete, it weighed more than a Buick.  We had to return it.  Fond memories of fun times in our youth.  My condolences to the family.  David Burley 

I will always be his biggest fan and he did a wonderful job by filming all the Ernest movies  :) RIP John Cherry III love you and make more ernest movies up in heaven with Varney until I see you guys again soon. 

I just learned of your passing Buster and will light a candle for you tonight. We go way back to the Ernest/Disney days and remained friends for 30 years. You were such a brilliant man and always had a new idea to pursue. See you on the other side my dear old friend. 

See y'all at the memorial on June 11. Prayers of comfort going out for Mr. Cherry's precious family. I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Cherry, or else I would refer to him as Buster. "Thanks for creating and directing such a wonderful and original character that has brought so much joy to this crazy world." Being from Lexington, Mr. Jim Varney is still considered a 'big deal' and we are truly grateful for his talent and the fun results of his collaboration with Carden and Cherry Advertising. The team were like "lightning in a bottle." Thank you for bringing Mr. Ernest P. Worrell into the lives of people from 2 to 102... When I was in my late twenties and living in Nashville, God lead me to be a part of group of brothers who would meet early on Mondays for about four years to talk and walk along and help hold each other up as life does it’s thing to us. To me that was “real church”.  It was a great source of sitting with older dudes being real and listening to brothers who had been down the road. John “Bustsr” Cherry was in that group. He was a successful artist and owner of marketing firm. He also wrote and directed films… the Ernest Goes To___ films. Amazing water color artist. Wicked sense of humor, he had some stories and was full of wisdom and insight into doing art for a living and life in general. He gave me work to do for him as a young animator. I did the end logo animation his production company. He showed me how to broker business deals. I could go on. To say this man had an impact on my life is huge understatement. Till we see face to face again my brother. Thank your being in my life and thank God for bringing us together.

As a copywriter in late 70s headed with the crew to the Bahamas to shoot a spot. Boat ride for fun turned into my first introduction to discovering the agony of seasickness. But also how kind Buster could be. Led me to a spot on the boat that helped me feel better without embarrassing me in front of the others. Funny how you remember a little kindness like that. 


Shortly after starting to work for 1220 exhibits in 1985 Buster had asked myself and another coworker to go over to Ernest‘s home and take some prop set ups when we got there Ernest was there laughing in a hot tub with several women and ask us to join them at the time I valued my job more but sure want in that hot tub at only 20 years old when I got back and told Buster about it he also laughed and said I would not have fired you over that my sincere condolences to family and friends 

When we lived on Churchwood Drive in Oak Hill between 1977 and 1986,  the kids from the Conner, Cherry, and Frazier families roamed between the three houses for adventures.
The Cherry house, however, was probably their favorite because of the pool!!!
Then there were the Purity commercials, which meant lots of free ice cream, to eat and to bring home!!!
The best memories, perhaps, are the visits from Buster, aka "Santa Claus," on Christmas Eve in full regalia!!!  Buster was in his element with the Ho-Ho-Ho's!   The kids squealed and laughed and never let on that it was anyone but the REAL Santa!!

Thank you, Buster, for so many sweet memories!!    

I always remember going to the Cherry’s home meant home made mayonnaise, a swimming pool at their neighbor’s house and playing with Teresa,  my best friend, John’s sister!  The fishing boat was always ready to go! In fact Mr. Cherry taught me to ski! When John asked his sister and friends to sit in a portable at Overton High School for a Purity dairy commercial we thought we had made it big but of course Vern was the one John had created and we were the sidekicks! It is still a great memory! Thank you John for sharing your creativity with the world! You made it a better place! With love, Diane Stone Goodman
