The last of a Slater generation are now back together again. JD Slater (84) was the last of eight children raised by Oliver and Hattie Slater of Turkey Creek, Kentucky. JD was born from humble beginnings, on December 22, 1935 at the “homeplace” on Slater’s Branch and passed away peacefully at his Brentwood, Tennessee home on July 27, 2020. He attended David Lipscomb College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. JD was not easily forgotten and could be accurately described as a natural born salesman. He loved his family deeply, the lake (houseboat), and animals. During his early stages of Alzheimer’s, he often told the story of his pet groundhogs that lived under the porch as a child and his working goat, Billy.
He and Ruth Ann Viers-Slater married and had three children of their own, Leasa J. Slater-Clemons (Michael Clemons), Jeffery D. Slater and Kevin B. Slater (Laura Anderson-Slater). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kaytlynn Clemons, Christian Clemons, Benjamin Slater, J. Dean Slater, and Samantha Slater. He will be lovingly remembered by his fiancée, Nancy Grear of Hendersonville, Tennessee.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM Friday, July 31 and 10:00-11:00 AM Saturday, August 1. A celebration of JD’s life will be held virtually on Facebook live immediately following visitation on Saturday. You can access it directly at: https://www.facebook.com/WoodlawnRoesch.
A graveside service will be held for all who wish to attend at 11:45 AM at his graveside at Woodlawn - Roesch Patton Funeral Home in Nashville, Tennessee.
He loved deeply and was deeply loved. JD, you will be missed. From here on out, you’re going to have to “pack your own chute.”
