WESSON, James Robert “Bob” age 88, passed away on April 25, 2010 at McKendree Health Center. Preceded in death by his parents, Luke and Myrtie Wesson, three brothers and one sister. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Janelle “Jan” Wesson; daughter Janelle (Rolf) Klenk of San Jose, CA; sons: Bobby (Jenny) Wesson of Nolensville, TN, Phil (Karen) Wesson of White Hall, AR, and Mark (Sherry) Wesson of Ooltewah, TN; grandchildren: Mark (Margaret), Alan (Christine) and Kevin (Mary) Klenk; Jeff and Scott Wesson; Jeremy (Laura) Wesson; Maggie (Scott) Dawson; Chris (Rachel), Greg (Caroline), and Matt Wesson; and eleven great-grandchildren. Bob served his country in the US Army Air Corps from April 1942, until October 1945 and was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. He received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from Birmingham-Southern College in 1948, and a year later his M.S. degree from Vanderbilt University. In 1953 Bob was awarded the first PhD degree in Mathematics given at Vanderbilt. He was Professor of Mathematics at Birmingham-Southern from 1951 – 1957, and at Vanderbilt from 1957- 1990 where he received many awards and honors, and served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Using his mathematical skills, Bob contributed to the NASA effort to put a man on the moon. He wrote many mathematics papers, including a widely used textbook entitled "Lessons in Linear Algebra." He was an active member of Crievewood United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and held numerous leadership positions. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crievewood United Methodist Church, Vanderbilt University, McKendree Golden Cross, or Alive Hospice. Funeral Services will be conducted by Rev. Susan Gardner on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 2:00 PM, Crievewood United Methodist Church, 451 Hogan Road, Nashville. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8 at WOODLAWN-ROESCH-PATTON FUNERAL HOME, 660 Thompson Lane and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
