I was very sad to read about Professor Wesson's death in the Vanderbilt alumni magazine.  I was a math major at Vanderbilt and went on to get my masters in secondary education.  I was blessed to have had a class with Professor Wesson in the spring of 1990 right before he retired.  I loved his class because he was such a great teacher! I went on to be a high school math teacher in Nashville and now in Atlanta.  I can remember receiving a call from Professor Wesson several years after I finished my degree.  He had seen my picture in the paper and had tracked me down to say hello.  He was such a kind and thoughtful man and he will be greatly missed!

     Uncle Bob was always smiling.  I remember him at family reunions, and my husband and I enjoyed seeing him when we visited him and Aunt "Babe" in TN.  That wonderful smile made others happy, and we will miss him.

I was Bob's student in several courses and a math major at Vandy and I have just completed a long career as a math professor. I'll never forget what he said and did in a linear algebra course when he was explaining if-and-only-if proofs: he rubbed his open hand down and then up his face, wiggling it dramatically when he encountered his nose on the way back up and saying "in an if-and-only-if proof, one way is easy, but the other way is HAAAAARD!" as he did it. I have taken off my glasses and used that "Wesson Wiggle" explanation many, many times in classes I have taught and every time I gave Dr. Wesson credit for it. Bob was an enjoyable colleague. We were on many committees and his calm reasoning was very welcome. We were both senior runners and he always complimented me on my efforts. I participated in 4-5 Crievewood runs and always won my age group, for which he praised me; always an encouraging person. He will be missed and remembered.

Dr Wesson was my favorite professor at Vanderbilt.  His passion for teaching was matched by his compassion for students and his love for Vanderbilt basketball.  I smile when I remember one class where he was obviously ill - I asked why he just didn't call in sick, and he said he couldn't because he would feel guilty going to the basketball game that night.

At some point in my academic career, Dr Wesson wrote my mother a letter with some kind words about my academic performance.  I'm sure he did this for many others, but it made a lasting impression on her.  I see that my sister has already reported how he counseled her to remain at Vandy when she wanted to do something else.

Dr Wesson was one of a kind.   I really miss him, and I wish the family many condolences and wonderful memories of a man who touched so many lives.

Dr. Wesson quietly encouraged me to continue my studies at Vanderbilt when I considered dropping out my freshman year.  His wise counsel during my exit interview suggested I stay "one more semester," knowing that I was likely to finish if I could hang on a little longer.  I completed my undergraduate and graduate work at Vanderbilt, even meeting my husband in the process.  That one meeting was life changing - I am forever grateful.

I have such fond memories of our visits to see Uncle Bob and Aunt Ruth Janelle and all of my cousins-nearly every summer of my childhood. I know that Uncle Bob's sweet spirit will be missed, but rejoicing to be in the arms of the Lord! My prayers are with you all as you deal with the empty place that is left in your family.
