Fredrikka attended public and military dependent schools and graduated from Fort Campbell High School, Fort Campbell, KY, in 1972. In 1979 she graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts and was a journalism major.
She moved to Nashville in late 1979, securing a job at the Metro Nashville Police Department Central Records as a civilian support worker where she worked for 25 years, retiring in 2005 It was there, in 2001, that she began transitioning on the job and living as the woman she always knew she was.
Fredrikka always wanted people to understand the transgender phenomenon and gave many a seminars on the subject from a black perspective at many gay and lesbian and transgender conferences. Such as Southern Comfort Conference in Atlanta, TSTBC in Louisville, Call to Action in Milwaukee, and the United Methodist Reconciling Congregation convocation. She was a longtime member of the Tennessee Vals, a local transgender social and support group and wrote many columns and edited its monthly newsletter. She also was a co-chair of the Dignity USA transgender caucus for many years, and a frequent Dignity convention-goer.
A woman of deep faith, Fredrikka was a member of Saint Edward Catholic church where she was very active prior to her transition. She also made many friends at Edgehill United Methodist church where she married the late Elizabeth Gary.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a sister, Barbara Maxwell of Clarksville, TN, three brothers, Derrell (Dottie) Maxwell of Clarksville, TN, Anthony (Cosette) Maxwell, of Griffin, Georgia, and Mario (Jackie) Maxwell of Crestview, Florida as well as several nieces and nephews.
