Married Patricia Ann Maxwell in 1950 in Bombay, India where he was a district manager with Standard Vacuum Oil Company. After marriage and starting a family, he continued with SVOC in Colombo, Ceylon for two years.
Attended New York School of Interior Design. Returned to Nashville in 1956 and prior to establishing his own interior design firm, Dan Burton Interiors, was in partnership with L Maxwell Smith. He served on the board of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), was President of the Tennessee chapter and was elected a Fellow. Among his many clients were Minnie Pearl, Jim Nabors and Al Gore.
Gifted with color discernment and an imaginative spatial sense, his room designs were unfailingly original. For one Junior League Showcase House, the room he designed boasted 16 shades of white. Through the classroom, as well as the showroom, he influenced an entire generation of Nashville interior designers.
In Nashville, he was an award winning actor and director at Circle Theater.
He founded the Whitland Avenue July 4 Parade with Slick Lawson in the late 1970s, which has become a Nashville tradition.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn Burton Cook, his niece Ginger Cook Wells, and his nephew Darryl Burton. He is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Patricia Maxwell Burton; his brother William Burton and wife Alberta Brown Burton; his son, Gilliam Maxwell Burton and wife Mary Thornhill Burton; his son, Daniel Farrell Burton, Jr. and wife Caroline Little Burton; his son, Fletcher Martin Burton; his daughter, Flavia Ann Burton; his five Burton grandchildren: Matthew Daniel, Kristina Helen, Carolyn Patricia, Sophia Maxwell, and Alexander John. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and their families: Alyson Cook Robinson, Lisa Cook Fredrick, and Randall Burton.
Family will receive visitors at 3744 Whitland Avenue, from 4:00-6:00 pm, on Saturday August 30th.
Remembered as one who came to love ... and did.
