Barbara W. Potter, 87, of Nashville, died January 17, 2020. Barbara was born in Washington, D.C. on January 19, 1932 to Joseph F. and Lottie Carson Worley. Barbara attended Western High School in Washington. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma at, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from, George Washington University (B.A., Geography). She worked in St. Augustine, Florida as one of the first woman City Planners on the East Coast. After moving to Nashville in 1963, she was a homemaker and mother to her three sons, applying her time and talents to their school PTAs. Her third career was in HR at the United Methodist Board of Higher Education. A member of the Vanderbilt Bridge Club of Nashville, she was a bronze life master. In retirement, she traveled throughout Canada and Europe. She later moved to Richland Place, where she enjoyed a supportive, close-knit community and a chance to share her love of bridge (lately, whist). Many thanks to Angelita Strohman, who helped make Barbara’s last years lovely. Throughout, she was a devoted member of Belle Meade United Methodist Church, active in Sunday School, Choir and Hand Bell Choir.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents and older brother, Joseph F. Worley, Jr. She is survived by three sons and their families: Thomas K. Potter, III (Trish) of Nashville and children Lindsay of Amery, WI and Carson of San Francisco, CA; Lee C. Potter (Melissa) of Columbus, OH and children, Emma of Portland, OR, Maggie and Riley; Joseph W. Potter (Jane) of Winston-Salem, NC and children, Laurin and Davis.
Services will be at 1:30 pm on Saturday, February 22 at Belle Meade United Methodist Church, with visitation at a reception after. Memorials may be made to Belle Meade UMC, the Nashville Symphony, or Alive Hospice.
