Robert A. Capwell, known as “Bob,” passed away on July 15, 2024, in Naples, Florida. Bob was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1942, to George L. Capwell and Margaret Capwell. He was the youngest of five siblings. His mother died when he was 16 years old. Bob spent part of his youth in Ecuador and Panama, where his father worked as an electrical engineer. Bob grew up speaking English and Spanish and developed an early love of sports due to his father’s influence.
While Bob’s parents remained in Latin America, Bob attended elementary school at Stella-Niagara, a Catholic elementary school near Niagara Falls, NY. He attended high school at Admiral Farragut Academy in Toms River, NJ. His college years were spent at Marquette University, in Milwaukee, WI, where he majored in Business Administration, participated in Naval ROTC, and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity. Most importantly, Bob met his wife Loretta during their sophomore year at Marquette.
Bob and Loretta married in 1966, and immediately moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where Bob served as a Naval officer. Highlights of Bob’s years in the Navy include deployments to Adak, Alaska, flights over the Bering Sea looking for submarines, and 6 months in Okinawa, Japan during the Vietnam War. After separating from the Navy, Bob attended graduate school at Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management, in Phoenix, AZ.
After graduate school, Bob was hired by Bank of America. During his more than 20 year career with Bank of America, Bob, Loretta and their daughter Carrie lived in San Francisco, CA; Miami, FL; Caracas, Venezuela; Bogota and Cali, Colombia; Lima, Peru; and Guayaquil, Ecuador. Their time in Guayaquil was especially memorable because several of Bob’s family members lived in Guayaquil, and the city boasts a soccer stadium named after Bob’s father, due to his many contributions to sports in Guayaquil. While working for Bank of America in South America, Bob served as the country manager. After leaving Bank of America, where Bob rose to the level of senior vice president, he joined Citco Bank and lived in the Caribbean islands of St. Maarten and Curaçao. Family and friends, including daughter Carrie and several college friends, enjoyed Bob’s time in the Caribbean!
In 1995, Bob and Loretta embarked on a new and challenging adventure: they acquired and operated a MailBoxes, Etc. (now UPS Store) franchise in Naples, FL, near the Vineyards golf course, where they planned to retire. In November 2003, they sold the business and retired. Bob and Loretta enjoyed many golf games together and spending time with friends on the 19th hole. Bob was an avid golfer and very proud of his two holes-in-one — the second one on his 74th birthday. If you knew Bob, it was obvious he was a HUGE sports fan. His favorite teams were the Boston Red Sox, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (football), and the Marquette Warriors (basketball). Bob was passionate about sports; they brought him much joy and excitement throughout his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Kathleen McGuiness (James McGuiness), George (“Spike”) L. Capwell, Jr. (Noreen Capwell), and Dorothy Capwell.
He is survived by his wife Loretta, daughter Carrie (Eric Immesberger), grandchildren Blake and Kiera, sister Jeanne Harris, and many beloved nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
A service will be held in the Fall.
