Michael Joseph Ring, 80, of Old Naples, FL. Died on Tuesday, Aug 12th, in Naples Community Hospital downtown. He was born on July 29, 1934 in New York City, NY, the son of Michael and Ellen (Cunningham) Ring.
Mike Joined the U.S. Marines in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He was a graduate of St. Francis Preparatory School in Spring Grove, PA in 1953. While at the Prep he was editor of the school newspaper and played on the football team. In later years he served on the Alumni Board.
Mike attended the NYC Police Academy and became one of New York’s Finest. He retired in 1981. For many years he marched in the City of Naples St. Patrick’s Day Parade with the Naples NYPD contingent.
He attended the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, NY. He was the oldest student accepted at that time. Mike was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Ann Council 11079 and other organizations including the International Police Association.
Following retirement he traveled a great deal with his love of sailing and he and Amy Rego, the love of his life had a home in St. Croix, USVI before settling in Old Naples in 1991. He’s been president of the Franciscan Association and recently as Treasurer.
Mike is survived by his life-partner, Amelia “Amy” Rego, her daughter Elizabeth Rego Dynan (Daniel) and granddaughter Danielle. His first marriage ended in divorce. He and Amy enjoyed attending the Naples Phil, being docents at the Naples Historical Society’s Palm Cottage where he was their first Santa Clause, and cruising.
Mike is survived by his brother Philip Ring (Nancy, of Aiken, SC, his sister Annemarie (Mary Vivo) of Hartford, CT. He was predeceased by his younger brother Richard Ring. In addition there are 10 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews.
There will be a Funeral Mass at St. Ann RC Church at 1:00pm on Saturday August 16th with a vigil at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens on Friday August 15th (TODAY) from 4:00pm-8:00pm.
