From a young age, he worked in the family-owned business Lockwood Lumber, which was founded by his father and his father's siblings.
Howard enlisted in the Navy in 1944 at age 17. He was commissioned on a sub-chaser in the South Pacific and served as Staff Sergeant. After his return from World War II he met and married the love of his life, Eva Maria Bass. They settled in Ardsley, NY where they raised their three children (Peter, Suzanne, and Michael). Howard was involved in many aspects of his children's lives serving as a coach, scout-master, or wherever he might be needed. He attended all of Suzanne's piano recitals. He never missed a hockey game during Mike's college career.
In 1976 Howard (along with Peter) left Lockwood Lumber and purchased King Lumber (Goldens Bridge, NY) and brought a failing business back to life. King Lumber is still thriving today, being run by Peter and Peter's two sons (Howard's grandsons) Martin and Warren.
Howard was a very social and generous man. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He had very a strong work ethic and didn't care for wastefulness. He loved his country. He cherished his friends. He enjoyed playing cards, dining, and occasionally dancing.
Howard had a real passion for playing golf. He didn't pick the game up earnestly until later in his life but derived much joy from the competition among his buddies. He has passed that love of the game on to his family.
Howard loved his children and his grandchildren immensely. He took great pride in always being there for them when they needed him. He is survived by Peter Lockwood (Mara), Suzanne (Lockwood) Pack, Michael Lockwood (Anne), and six grandchildren who loved him dearly (Christopher, Martin, Kyle, Warren, Cara Anne, and Keely). His wife of 54 years, Eva, predeceased him in 2007.
There will be a remembrance of his life at The Strand Golf Clubhouse on January 2 from 1-3 pm.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hodgesfhatnaplesmg.com for the Lockwood family.
