James Douglas Hugh Craig, age 81, of Nanaimo, BC passed away peacefully with family by his side on February 7, 2024. He was born to Malcolm and Isabelle Craig on April 8, 1942, in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Doug was the second of six children; predeceased by his brother Colin Craig (Linda) in 2023 of Sudbury, Ontario. Doug is survived by his sister Charlotte Donaldson (Bob) of Victoria BC, Barry Craig (Gen) of Saskatoon SK, Judy Allard (Vic) of Dryden ON, Cam Craig (Eva) of Victoria BC as well as many of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doug married his first wife Yvette in Winnipeg, and they had three children together: Ed Craig (Sandy) of Nanaimo BC, Nicole Doyon (Michel) of Courtenay BC, and Colette Giroux (Vic) of Qualicum Beach BC.
Doug then moved to BC and met the love of his life Darlene; they were happily married for 52 years. They had two children together: David Craig (Jennifer) of Victoria, BC and Shannon Livingston (Dylan) of Ladysmith BC.
Doug grew up in Terrace Bay, ON where he found his love for sports. He spent part of his youth in Fort William ON and moved on to Winnipeg MB where he attended trade school to become a welder. He then moved on to Thompson MB, before moving to BC. His passion for welding brought him to the forest industry on Vancouver Island. He worked in a few camps including Stoltze Logging on Nootka Island and Cypre River out of Tofino. He then started his own Welding and Fabrication business, followed by approximately five years selling grapple yarders and log loaders for Madill out of Nanaimo. After retiring, Doug enjoyed winter trips to Arizona in his motor home, Caribbean cruising and Mexican holidays, before his health issues kept him closer to home.
Doug was an avid sports fan and in particular he had a great love for the Vancouver Canucks, BC Lions, Toronto Blue Jays and the Canadian curlers. Doug was a proud Canadian and a supporter of the Canadian military as he had many loved ones who served.
We would like to thank Dr. Mulder, NRGH nurses, Nanaimo home support and Island Health Palliative care. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cats Cradle Animal Rescue in Sidney, BC in Doug’s name: http://catscradleanimalrescue.com/
