Cynthia Mary (née Morris) Martin

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Cynthia Mary Martin, who left us on October 1, 2024, after a long illness, at her home in Nanaimo, BC. Cynthia was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend, whose kindness and thoughtfulness touched the lives of many.

Cynthia was born in Montreal, Quebec, and moved with her family to Calgary, AB, at the age of seven, and later to North Delta, BC, at fourteen. She graduated from North Delta High School and pursued studies in structural drafting at Douglas College in Richmond, BC. Cynthia worked for many years as a drafter before returning to school in 1992 at Pitman Business College to pursue a career in administration. Her unique combination of skills made her highly valued at companies such as Triton Environmental, McMillan Bloedel, Perkins Architecture, and Opus Engineering.

In April 1996, Cynthia married Alan William Martin, and together they built a life filled with love and companionship. They started their married life in Prince George, BC, where they made many friends and enjoyed the early years of their marriage. In 2002, they moved to Nanaimo, BC, where Cynthia took on the care of her aging parents.

Cynthia was predeceased by her parents, Hollis J. Morris and Berlinda (Linda) Mary Morris (née Donahue). She is survived by her loving family; husband, Alan; her brother, Gary Morris; her sister, Dale Hannebauer (Robert); and her cherished nieces and nephews: Erin Hannebauer, Sarah Thom, Callum Thom, Cameron Shaw, Allison Shaw, Maia Smith, and Iona Smith. She also leaves behind her mother-in-law, Agnes (Nan) Martin; father-in-law, William D. Martin; sisters-in-law, Pauline Martin (Pierre Remund) and Anne Shaw (Allan); and many other friends and extended family.

Cynthia had a special place in her heart for her lifelong friend, Karen Crawford, who provided immense support and care, especially in Cynthia’s final weeks. Cynthia’s love for animals was evident in her devotion to her dogs, including Blackie, Mickey, Sophie, Greta, Lilly, Henrey, Tessa, and especially Leo, who was her steadfast companion in her final years.

Cynthia was artistic, enjoying painting, knitting, and needlework. She loved dancing, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed traveling, particularly to Scotland, where she connected with Alan’s extended family. She was known for her generosity, thoughtfulness, and the joy she found in creating a comfortable home to share with Alan.

A funeral mass will be held for Cynthia at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Nanaimo, BC, on October 17, 2024, at 1:30 PM, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC SPCA would be greatly appreciated.

Cynthia will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.
