Ronnie received his Bachelor’s degree from Lamar University, a Master’s from Stephen F. Austin State University, and attended L.S.U for his PhD in Kinesiology. Ronnie also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
A dedicated father, Ronnie spent many years at ball fields and theaters supporting his children while they pursued their respective passions.
During his 46 years as a professor and graduate program leader in the Kinesiology Department at SFASU he made lasting connections with many students and colleagues. While he remained humble about his contributions to the university, perhaps one of his most his most treasured accomplishments was as one of the founding fathers of the NBA, the Noon Ball Association, a faculty basketball game held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday since the 1970’s. Even after his retirement, Dr. Barra continued to participate.
He is preceded in death by his mother Margaret Mayo, stepfather and dear friend Vernon Mayo, his father Charles Barra, and his sister Marjorie Mayo.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cathy Barra, daughter Stacie Barra, son-in-law Anthony Tournis, son Bradley Barra, sister Lisa Juneau, and granddaughter Greer Tournis.
Very special thanks to Dr. Aaron Polk, Jhun Maulion, The Hospice of East Texas, and friends and family who paid him visits.
A memorial reception will be held, Saturday, August 11, 2018, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM, at the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Regents Suite A, Stephen F. Austin State University, on the second floor.
