Mrs. Dempsey entered heaven’s gates on December 20, 2018, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born on November 29, 1933, in Ponta, Texas.
Mrs. Mary was the sweetest, kindest, big-hearted person you have ever meet. She had beautiful eyes, and she had the biggest smile that could light up a room and lift a heavy heart. The more people she met in life, the bigger her heart grew to love them. She never ran out of love for a family member, church member, friend, or child.
She started caregiving as soon as she arrived on earth, but when she married her husband she had a whole new amount to give. She loved her David with all of her heart, all through her life. When her family began, she found great love for her daughters. Mary was the primary caregiver for her children while her husband traveled away to work. Mary was never ugly to anyone. She lived by mottos you can still hear her say: “It’s better to be nice than to be mean,” or “You can catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar.”
Mary cared for her girls by sewing many outfits for them and guiding them to develop their own sewing skills. She had a very deep relationship with God. Her faith not only kept her grounded, but was used to encourage everyone in her circle. Her daughter said of her, “My mom was the closest person to Jesus that I ever knew.” She often invited her to say a prayer for her. She cared for many children while the girls were growing, and she would often find odd jobs to keep her busy and help with finances. Mary was the kind of person who poured herself out to others to share the love of God. She loved her whole family: her sons-in-law, her grandchildren, her great-grands, and her great-great-grandkids. She enjoyed preparing a favorite meal when a special day, like a birthday, was being celebrated. She loved a trip to McDonald’s for a sweet apple pie. When she had free time she would be crocheting, sewing quilts, growing flowers, cooking her favorite meals, or just sharing her smile with the next person that crossed her path. Mary’s life mattered and made a difference in every other life she touched.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Jewell Green; sisters, Elsie Reynolds and Eula Gunter; brothers, Edward Green and Luther Green, Jr.; husband of 66 years, David Dempsey; son-in-law, Robert Cook; and grandson, Hoyt Cook.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherron Cook and Connie Barbe and husband Richard; sister, Edna Merle Meseke; grandchildren, Melissa Fenley and husband David, Angelia Clark and Michael Nash, Summer Middlebrook and husband Grayson, Laura Jo Donnell, Luther Cook and wife Allie, Nora Cook and Charles Rudisill, and Sheila Collett and husband Scott; 21 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
