Margarette Ovilia Ellis Pitts passed away on August 10, 2020 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Margarette was born on July 26, 1921 in New Summerfield, Texas to parents, Olin Kyle Ellis and Bonnie Clara McNiel Ellis.
Margarette received a BS in Education from SFASU and a professional Counseling Certification. She started her career as a teacher in Chireno and made lifelong friends with many of her students. She took a break to get married and have two children then continued her career in Nacogdoches ISD. From Nacogdoches she moved to Central Heights and spent 15 years there. She was then hired by the Superintendent of Schools for Nacogdoches County as a Counselor and administer of testing for county schools. She made many friends in the rural school systems and random students would see her in public and remind her of their experiences with her. In 1978 she decided to end her career in education and become a cattle rancher. She moved to Ranger, Texas, where her daughter and son in law lived and helped raise grandkids and cows. She took up gardening and raised delicious vegetables and fruits to share with family and friends. In 2004 she came back to Nacogdoches to renew friendships and to attend the church of her younger years, Stallings Drive Church of Christ. She enjoyed great neighbors and visits from all her 6 grandkids and 13 great grandkids. She died peacefully with family and loved ones nearby.
She was an avid hunter and fisher woman. Squirrel hunting, quail hunting, and dove hunting were a passion. Fishing was a favorite pastime, especially if her oldest grandson was driving the boat. And he took pleasure in making her nervous with his antics. Many years she hunted with her family in South Texas and often harvested the best game of the season. She did some traveling after retirement and loved every minute of it. Her door was always open to her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Olin and Bonnie Ellis; mother and father-in-law, Marcus and Alice Pitts; husband, Stewart Thomas Pitts; sisters, June Banks and Earla Clifton; brother, Kyle Ellis; son-in-law, Harvey Butler.
She leaves behind her daughter and son in law—Bonnie and David Windham of Nacogdoches; daughter—Thomasann Butler of Chireno; grandson, Kevin Butler and Sheree Tubbe of Chireno; granddaughter and husband, Kathy and Doug Durrett of Chireno; granddaughter, Cathryn Windham of Austin; grandson and wife, Thomas and Sylvia Butler of Nacogdoches; granddaughter and husband, Allison and Eddie Gallegos of Jonesboro; grandson and wife, William and Linda Windham of Nacogdoches; 13 great-grandchildren; and faithful care giver and friend, Gay Clary.
