Dr. Josephine Raburn, the youngest of five children, and beloved mother, daughter, sister, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on December 8, 2018 at the age of 89. She was born December 6, 1929 in Norman, Oklahoma to Albert Ernest and Josephine Hudson Riling. She married James Winston Raburn on September 29, 1950 at Camp Polk, Louisiana.
Josephine received a Bachelor of Science Degree, a Master’s in Library Science, and a Ph.D. in Educational Technology from the University of Oklahoma. She held a variety of positions throughout her life, including working at the Naval Supply Depot at Mechanicburg, Pennsylvania, Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, and as a librarian in Special Services and at the Morris Sweatt Technical Library at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In 1962 she became a Special Instructor in Library Science at the University of Oklahoma.
In 1967 she began teaching at Cameron University and became a full professor there. She then became the first Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, naming the school. She retired as Dean in 1991. She returned to Cameron from retirement in 1995 to teach one course to Master’s students in Germany at Rhine Mein Air Force Base.
She participated in many organizations. She was a life member of the American Library Association. She belonged to the Oklahoma Library Association, Cameron University Alumni Association, Beta Phi Mu International Library Honor Society, and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma where she was Xi Chapter president, Chapter I, P.E.O., Lawton Book and Play Club Board, Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild Board and the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra Board. She held offices on all of the boards. She served on the Lawton Public Library Board got thirteen years and was its president in 1973. She served on the Oklahoma Sequoyah Children’s Book Award Committee for seven years and chaired it for one year.
She authored numerous periodical articles and worked for Salem Press on listings in their reference work on young adult literature. She is listed in Who’s Who of the South and Southwest, Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in Library and Information Services.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters and her husband of 58 years. She is survived by her daughters Catherine Heller and husband Robert of Portland, Texas and Dr. Lynn Greenleaf and husband Garrison of Nacogdoches, Texas; grandchildren James Greenleaf serving at the US Consulate in Hong Kong, China; Tamara Greenleaf of Parker, Colorado; Ashley Baade and husband Curtis Baade of Richmond, Texas; Richard Heller of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Sean Heller of Portland, Texas; great-grandchildren Eric Baade, Evelyn Baade and Emily Baade. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Services will be private.
