Mrs. Jessie Lee "Jackie" Armstrong Murray, age 90, passed from this life, to be with her Lord and Saviour, on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, experiencing the ultimate Independence Day. Free, at last, from the long suffering confinement of her nurshing home bed since a stroke in 2009. She is whole again in the presence of Jesus.
Jackie, a.k.a. "Jack," as she was called by her mom; a.k.a. "Grandma," as she was called by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many of her son Johnny's adult friends after hearing him affectionately refer to her as such, was born to Arthur Lee and Pearl Elizabeth Fortenberry Armstrong on December 4, 1926, in Hedley, Texas. She had one sibling, a brother Minford Eugene Armstrong; and married the father of her four children, J.D. Lesley, when she was only 17. Jackie loved her family and was known as a hard worker. While raising her children in Amarillo, she took in washing and ironing and babysat so she could stay home with her own. When they were grown she worked in housekeeping at a hotel/motel.
She later married Wayne Murray. After A.L. and Pearl retired to East Texas, she and Wayne followed them to "God's Country," Nacogdoches, where they owned and operated Murray's East Main Exxon, a full service gas station, serving their customers with a full line of mechanical repairs, oil changes, and car washes with detailing. When the full service stations gave way to self serve, they moved to Black Jack and raised broilers for Tyson.
Jackie faithfully attended Melrose Baptist Church for many years. She loved having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit and after her Dad passed away she lovingly took care of her Mom.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Pearl Armstrong; and a daughter, Dianne Honea.
Jackie is survived by her son, Johnny S. Lesley; daughters, Debra Lesley and Cindy Dunn; grandchildren, Jarrod Lesley, Kelley Lesley, Jordan Lesley Wadleigh, Jamie Bradley, Brian Bannister, and Dana Mashburn; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Lesley, Mykah Wadleigh, Owyn Wadleigh, Jayden Lesley, Blade Lesley, Tanner Bradley, Nick Bradley, and Hannah Bradley.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Services for Jackie will be held in the Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 2:30 p.m., with a visitation one before the service, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Private burial will follow be in the Chireno Lower Cemetery in Chireno, Texas.
Visitation will begin an hour before the service.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas.
