Frances Adams Shofner

Frances Adams Shofner; our Mom, our YaYa, our friend and David’s precious wife went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 26, 2017. Frances was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on November 12, 1953 to Frances “JuJu” Adams and S.M. Adams, Jr. She attended Christ Episcopal School and graduated from Nacogdoches High School. During her years at NHS, she was head cheerleader and elected to many honors. She went to Texas Tech University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and graduated in 1975. Frances also received her teaching certificate after post graduate work at Southwest Texas State University.

Frances loved her family. Her three children were her pride and joy. The boys, Lee and Sam with daughter Kate in the middle. Great times were had together on their travels, at their home, at their ranch in the Hill Country and their farm in Nacogdoches. The weddings of both Lee and Kathryn and Kate and Brendon were highlight moments. The happiness of the weddings was nothing compared to the addition of her grandchildren, Leighton, Everlee and Ben. The three grandchildren added a dimension of joy to the family and prompted an addition to her home where her growing family could gather.

The love of travel was a constant theme in her life. Her parents, Moss and JuJu, instilled that in her. She traveled to most of the countries of Europe, the Caribbean and South America. A summer in Europe with Mary Wright Cason was the trip she talked about most. Frances and Mary attended Maxim’s Cooking School in Paris, and would take weekend trips covering most of Europe during that summer. Another trip close to her heart was one taken two years ago with David. Frances and David met their daughter, Kate and Kate’s husband, Brendon, in Madrid where they were living at the time. The two couples then drove through Spain and France, stopping and touring where they wished. They were able to go back to the exact apartment where Frances lived when she was in cooking school, which was a highlight for her.

Frances loved to be outdoors. Her friends often referred to her as the “pioneer woman.” She could bait a hook and catch more fish than anyone on the lake. She was also an accomplished organic farmer, growing bushels of tomatoes, blackberries, peppers and an assortment of herbs in her garden. Frances was particularly proud of the different varieties of artichokes and kiwis that she raised. When not gardening, she had two bee hives that she cultivated. Her love for antiques brought her into a business with friends organizing and putting on estate sales for many families around Nacogdoches. The love of her town and her community led her to many organizations including Historic Nac, Junior Forum, Cum Concilio Club, Friends of Music at SFA, the Nacogdoches Federation of Women’s Club, and the Nacogdoches Humane Society.

Frances loved the Lord. Her love for the Lord shown through during her battle with lung cancer. She did ask the question “Why” but was swift to follow up with “God is in control”. As her illness progressed, the peace that she derived from her walk with the Lord was evident.

The family wants to give their heartfelt thanks to all of our friends and acquaintances who have sent messages, thoughts and prayers our way. We have been overwhelmed with the love and support sent our way for our precious Frances. Although we will miss her immensely, we know that the Lord has her safe in His arms until we are one day together again.

To honor Frances memorial contributions may be offered to the Humane Society or the Historic Nac.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church on Mound Street at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to visitation on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Sunset Chapel.
