Dorteline (Dorothy) "Dot" Lantz was a modest woman, quiet and observant in her ways. She was traditional in her approach to her life. She was tough-minded with the kind of "stick to it" attitude that earned the respect of all who knew her. She was known as a great cook and kept a clean and orderly home. She was realistic about life and conservative in her ideas. She was a staunch Democrat and always voted along party lines.
Her parents were Philip & Agnes Richard. Dot was raised in lota, Louisiana, with 7
siblings. She had 3 sisters: Eva, Gertrude, Bobby and 4 brothers: Epil, Jeffrie, Wayne, and Terrel. Dot and her siblings may have had the typical rivalries while growing up but Dot was always consistently loyal to her family. There were good times to be had, but just as often there was a fair share of challenges as well.
Always considered to be a solid friend, Dot was fortunate to have numerous acquaintances and several very close friends - the Bufords, her card-playing buddies in Ragley, Louisiana; Ida Buford, her daily cup of coffee buddy, Joyce Bushnell, her walking &blackberry picking buddy; and Lou Thibodeaux, her Bingo buddy. Dot always had a cup of coffee ready for anyone that stopped by to visit and lots of good conversation.
On December 21, 1947, Dot exchanged wedding vows with Gilbert Lantz at the Justice of the Peace in lota, Louisiana in Acadia Parish. She had traditional values about marriage and family life. She took the responsibility of marriage to heart, giving it her total commitment. She was a source of strength to Gilbert and
worked hard to take care of her family. Dot brought the same traditional values in her marriage to bear on how she raised her children. She was firm and disciplined. There was no doubt where she stood on any situation. Dot was blessed with 7 children; 5 daughters, Martha, Marilyn, Jeanette, Darline, Paulette, and 2sons Michael and Scotty, who passed away on March 22, 2012. She was also blessed with 14 grandchildren, Cory Hamilton, Holly Hamilton, Michael Lantz, Jr, David Lantz, Sherina Snead, JoAnn Fisette, Jason Parish, Jodi Parish, Josh Hieronymus, Will Hieronymus, Amanda Smith, Kaleigh Smith, Dustin Hyatt, Dillon Gilger.
Dot was a hard worker, who expected the same in return from her co-workers. She worked effectively in small groups and in one-on-one situations as well as handling solo assignments. Always able to attend to the task at hand, Dot was excellent at meeting deadlines. She was an efficient worker, one who paid careful attention to detail, allowing sufficient time to complete one task before moving on to the next. She always got the job done. Her primary occupation through most of her life was a homemaker. She was employed as a waitress in her early years. Later in life she worked as a cafeteria worker at the local elementary and high school, then for Ray Hayes, a hair and beauty product distributor. Later, Dot retired to care for her husband, Gilbert, who suffered from advanced dementia.
Dot took great pride in keeping a clean and tidy home but in her spare time she found time to play. Her favorite pursuits were Bingo at the Moss Bluff Senior Center, the board game Sequence with her daughters, and watching the Voice every week. She would also watch her favorite sport events on TV whenever she had the opportunity. Tops on her list were NASCAR, especially when Dale Earnhardt raced, and the Saints football games, but only when Drew Brees played. She read the American Press religiously every day.
Dot was a woman who was dedicated and devoted to her faith. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Ragley, Louisiana, and St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff, Louisiana. In her mid-life years, she was an active member of the Ladies Altar Society at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Ragley,
Louisiana.
Dot was not a traveler or vacationer by nature. However, her son, Scotty, usually
could talk her into quick trips, like to Hodges Gardens, which she loved . Also, her daughters took her on lots of "Girl Trips" to celebrate all their "Big 0" birthdays. She always participated in their crazy skits and ended up having fun. Some of the weekend trips were to Toledo Bend, Florien, LA; Rayne, LA; Sam Rayburn Lake in Etoile, TX; New Iberia, LA; Sam Houston Park.
Dot did not have any pets but she did love newborn baby calves and loved watching them in the pastures surrounding her house. Dot had daily conversations with Hootie, the plastic owl that hung in her carport to ward off birds, and George, the big green frog, who visited her on her daily porch sittings.
