Janice was born on October 13,1934 to Mary Etta and James Wakefield of Burke County. Janice was the oldest of four children. She graduated from Olive Hill High School. After high school, Janice attended classes to become a hairdresser. She married her soulmate, Verdell Corpening in 1954. They were married for 57 years until his death in 2011. Janice and Verdell reared six children, Kelvin, Sandra, Verdell Anthony, Keith, Kathy and Karla.
In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, Janice worked outside of the home. She worked at Carolina Shoe company for 30 years. She was a member of the Hartland Church of God.
Janice was the heart of our home and family. She is grandmother to Louie “Trey” Corpening III, Ashley Jean- Baptiste (Jimmy), Kenny Conley (Shonce), Kayla Conley, Cortney Jacques, Harvey N. Walker III, and Taylor W. Ratliff (Terrance). She had six great grandchildren, Karter, Kyrie and Kayalanni, Amarie, Aniyah, Noah, Ivy Jade and Thea Grey.
Janice is survived by four of her six children, Kelvin, Sandra, Kathy and Karla. She is also survived by siblings, Mary E. Harshaw, James G. Wakefield and Nelda J. Bailey. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Wakefield, her husband, Verdell Corpening, and her sons Verdell Anthony, and Keith.
Janice demonstrated her love of family by cooking and baking favorite meals and desserts loved by her family. She made sure all family members felt special by her acts of love and service. She loved puzzles, gardening, sewing, and fishing. She shared her love of fishing and the outdoors with her family. Janice loved her family and spent her life in service to her family. She will be greatly missed.
