She is survived by her husband, Edward Donald Thomas (known as Ed), daughters Vanessa Geise (Michael) of Ohio and Tijuana Holston, and son Troy Thomas. Nikki's loving grandchildren include Troy Trotter and Marissa Guzaj (Joseph), both of Massachusetts, as well as Hollie and Joshua Holston, Makala and Theodore Thomas, and one great-grandchild, Zora Ashaka, of Maryland. She leaves behind one brother, Craig Pretlow, and countless friends and family. Her parents, Willa and Moses Pretlow, her sister Wanda R. Gomes (Wayne), and her brother Derek Pretlow preceded Nikki in death.
Born and raised in Newport News, Va., Nikki attended Huntington High School and pursued further education, earning her Associate's Degree. Her life journey continued as she traveled across the country with her husband, Ed, whom she was married to for over 59 years. Together, they created a family and a lasting legacy filled with love, happiness, and adventure.
Nikki began her career as a receptionist for the Public Defender’s Office in Riverside County, CA, while managing their home during her husband's travels with the Marine Corps. In 1982, she earned the Marine Corps Wife of the Year Recognition Award. Nikki's infectious smile and heartwarming personality endeared her to everyone she met. Known as "Nana" to her family, she remained engaged in their lives until her last days, whether it was traveling halfway across the country for a soccer game or calling during Sunday football to discuss a loss.
Nikki possessed extraordinary talents, from puzzles to sculpting and crocheting (which she taught to all her "girls"). Her best-known work was quilting, and her Quilting and Embroidering group brought her much joy. Whether at home or away, Nikki always found it in her heart to help others, seeking no recognition but finding reward in watching others grow.
Her imprint will forever be in the lives of those she touched. The family will strive to embody her grace, charm, and wisdom, ensuring that her legacy is everlasting.
The Funeral service can be viewed on Facebook under Nikki Thomas' page on January 30, 2024.
