William Ridley

Passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the Montreal General Hospital, on Sunday September 30, 2012 at the age of 88 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving sister Roberta Cameron (Richmond, PQ), Claudine Cartier his cousin (Westmount, PQ) as well as his many friends and caregivers.

Bill served his country with the Canadian Army overseas during WWII. On his return, he joined Wood Gundy where he worked in Quebec City and Montreal where, after an illustrious career in underwriting he retired as Executive Vice-President. Very active in the community, he was Past President - Rotary Club of Montreal where he received the Certificate of Merit Award for 50 years of service to Rotary and the Community. Past President of the Royal Montreal Curling Club. Chairman of Trustees, Westmount Park United Church where the Bell Tower was dedicated in his name.He also served on Finance & Extension Board of Montreal Presbytery of the United Church of Canada.

Past President and Treasurer of Nova (Montreal), where he served 35 years on the Board. Generous supporter of the Downtown YMCA. Named Officer of the YMCA Fellowship of Honour which is the highest honour awarded by YMCA Canada and presented to Bill by the former Governor General Romeo LeBlanc.

An avid golfer and ardent sportsman he was an Honorary Member of the Royal Montreal Golf Club. He also greatly believed in involvement for a cause, whether it was the YMCA Committee Against the Abuse of Elders or a world crisis on the other side of the world, he was ready to help. His contributions to society are too numerous to mention and his generosity, legendary. He was a man of faith and he touched many people and showed great strenght in his many heatlth problems which he bore with dignity and courage, particularly in recent years.

Visitation will be on at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home on Wednesday October 3, 2012 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held at Westmount Park United Church, 4695 de Maisonneuve Blvd.. West, Westmount, at 2 pm on Thursday, October 4, 2012.
