Richard was born in Edgware, Middlesex, UK and obtained his undergraduate physics degree at University College London, and his PhD in mathematical physics at King’s College. He came to Canada and took first a position at Queen’s University in Kingston, followed by another at Concordia University in Montreal, where he was a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1972 until his retirement.
Richard is predeceased by his parents Marie Margareta (née Keen) and Martyn Hall, and his brother Dominic Hall, and is survived by sisters Isobel Norton (Robin) and Christine Edwards (Paul), by his brother Joseph Hall, and by nieces and nephews, all in the UK.
He will be missed by his wife, Mariana Frank, and children Bruno Hall, Adam Atlas (Michal), Melinda Hall (Mike), Martin Hall (Eva), Alexander Hayne, and Astrid Hall, as well as grandchildren Eden, Ben and David Atlas, and Sara and Elin Wallin.
Richard enriched the lives of his many students, and he will be remembered above all as a gentleman and a scholar.
We thank the staff at Equinoxe Life Care and at Chateau Westmount nursing home for their exceptional care.
While the funeral is private, we plan a later day memorial service dedicated to his life and work.
