She was a luminary in the fields of developmental and reproductive toxicology and had an illustrious career marked by significant contributions to understanding the impacts of teratogens and environmental chemicals on health.
Barbara was born in Montreal, the first child of Raymond Edward Hales and Muriel Joyce Northcote. She received her M.Sc. in Pharmacognosy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Sciences and earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from McGill University. Her research spanned various critical areas, including the developmental toxicity of environmental chemicals and drugs, paternal exposure to anticancer agents, and the effects of flame retardants and plasticizers on reproduction and development. Dr. Hales published over 170 journal articles and 45 book chapters, significantly advancing the field of toxicology. Her work on the impact of environmental exposures on human health has left an enduring legacy and continues to influence policies and practices worldwide (McGill University). Outside of work, she loved to read and had a true passion for travel.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, Bernard Robaire, her son, Stephen Robaire (Jessica), her daughter, Sandra Robaire (Chris), her grandchildren Arielle, Luke, Tristan, and Chloe, her sisters Heather McCormack (Lee), Patricia Hales (Drew), her brother Douglas Hales (Nicky), her sisters-in-law Claudine Goodman (Michael) and Simone Robaire, her nephews Philippe (Michelle), Patrick (Samantha), Daniel (Maxime), Alain (Lucia), David (Bethany) and Christopher, and her nieces Brenda (Andrew) and Katherine (Kevin).
Barbara will be remembered as a devoted wife, incredible mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, mentor and friend. She led by example in everything she did and will always be remembered for her scientific brilliance, dedication to her field, and the profound impact she had on her colleagues, students, and the wider scientific community. She leaves us with a legacy of excellence, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to improving human health through science. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Barbara F.
