I was fortunate to have the opportunity to undertake my master’s trainee in the labs of Dr. Robaire and Dr. Hales. It wasn’t long before I discovered the welcoming nature of Dr. Hales and the warm environment she cultivated also outside the lab. 
Dr. Hales, a respected and cherished researcher, was always accessible to her students. She was an extraordinary mentor whose influence transcended the boundaries of her academic and professional tenure. Mentors like Dr. Hales have a profound impact on our professional and personal growth, leaving indelible impressions. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Hales for steering me on my research and personal journey, and for imparting invaluable tips and tricks. Even a few months ago at a conference, or through emails, she was always interested in knowing how I, a former trainee, was going and we laugh a lot together. 
Her radiant smile and infectious laughter will be etched in my memory for years to come.

Memories of Barbara go back many years.  I thought she would always be there, wisely brainstorming and orchestrating scientific gatherings such as IUTOX in 2007 and team meetings at McGill.   I will always remember and hold dear her warm hospitality and friendship.

I was a postdoctoral fellow in the Robaire and Hales labs from 2013 to 2018. 
 
When I first joined, I quickly became aware of Barbara's sterling record in the fields of toxicology and teratology. Over the years at McGill, I came to discover how beloved and respected a professor she was. She was a role model for many including myself, showing how you could build a brilliant career in academia with collaboration, collegiality and a strong sense of ethics.

There was this unique blend of no-nonsense wit and warmth to her: absolutely no BS was to go past her, but it was always said with kindness and humour. I will long remember her laughter, how her eyes lit up when she talked about her children and grandchildren, the daily tête-à-tête lunches she had with Bernard in his office. I will never forget how welcoming and generous she and Bernard were towards me. They opened their hearts and home to every single student who stepped foot in their labs.

I am grateful for the moments we shared and hope her family can take comfort in the tremendous legacy, both professional and personal, she leaves behind.

I know Barbara through my assocation with Bernard since I arrived at McGill in 1994. Bernard is a world class researcher and tremendous asset to the department during the years I was Chairman of the department and since then. Barbara was herself a towering figure in the world of reproductive toxicology and I am happy to make a small contribution to the fund to create a lectureship in her honor. I was truly saddened to hear of Barbara's news.  I first came to know Bernard when were worked as Associate Vice Principals in the Vice Principal Research and Graduate Dean's office in the   1990s.  Part of the treat of getting to know Bernard, was  getting to know Barbara from her warm hospitality, her infectious laugh and the twinkle in her eyes.  Over the years, I have been aware of her fine science, the numerous  students she mentored and the sense of integrity and equity she brought to many committees that  helped shape our University into a better place.   Finally, in these last few years, I had a chance to hear her tell about her children and to see her grand children's paintings and hand written notes on her fridge. She was a remarkably full woman, professor and mother. We are all blessed to have known her.

It is so sad to know that Dr. Hales has left us.   It is a huge loss for STC and the field of toxicology.  Everyone in the field of toxicology has learned so much from her work. Dr. Hales was the external interviewer for my PhD thesis defense. She provided me with many constructive suggestions that made my academic thinking more rigorous and divergent. I deeply appreciate her help and regret her passing.

Barbara was my closest friend when we were Mc Gill undergraduates . Coming from Vancouver and knowing no one, I really appreciated her introducing me to Montreal, Quebec, and her family in Valleyfield. Barb was a diligent student who also knew how to have fun. We enjoyed Friday night films and eating out at La Crepe Bretonne. We kept in touch over the years and I was honored to be invited to Sandra and Chris’ wedding. My sincere condolences to everyone in Hales Robaire family. I know Barbara’s passing will leave  much sadness, but also much pride in her contribution to science.
