Shirley Yvonne Green

She is preceded in death by her sister Betty Jane Brown. She is survived by her husband of nearly 69 years, Charles Reginald Green Sr., her four children: Charles Reginald Green Jr. (Sheila), Christopher Richard Green (Lisa), Craig Ray Green (Kelly), and Carl Robert Green (Martha); grandchildren: Charlene Green, Timothy Green(Karen), Christina Knight(Kevin), Connor Green(Holly), Cara England (Aarick), Harmony Green(Jacob Sorrells), and Kassidy Green. She was a grandmother to several great-grandchildren and other distant family.

Shirley was born July 5th of 1936 to her late parents Hiriam Weathers and Martha Jane Weathers in Altha, Florida, but she later moved to Marianna, Florida where she spent most of her “growing up” years. When she spoke of her childhood she talked a lot about her sister and mother, and exclaimed that they helped her become the lady she wanted to be. She loved the sunshine, and in latter years, even in the muggy Alabama heat, she loved to be outside in her chair sunbathing. Shirley had a strong belief in Jesus Christ, and loved going to church and reading her Bible.

A week after she graduated from high school she moved to Montgomery, Alabama and attended business school at Massey Draughon. When she got to Montgomery she moved in with L. B. Sullivan and his wife who was the police commissioner of Montgomery county in the 1950s. When she wasn’t busy with school she helped keep up with their two younger children. She always felt blessed by this opportunity.

In July of 1954 a suitor made a trip to Montgomery, Alabama from Elba, Alabama based on a suggestion from a friend to meet Ms. Shirley Weathers, and she liked him so much that she agreed to correspond with him via letters as he had just joined the US Air Force, and the rest was history. In November of 1955 Mr. Charles Reginald Green turned her into Mrs. Shirley Weathers Green.

Shirley had four children whom she loved so dearly, and while being a mother was her top priority, she also enjoyed and took pride in her work. There were several moves through the years due to her husband being in the military, but that did not stop her. In Mobile, Alabama where she birthed her last son she became friends with a Polly Burkett, and she became her lifelong friend and “sister by choice” they always said.

Shirley loved her family unconditionally. One of her favorite pass times was to travel. She talked countless times of her desires to travel the world, but she was happy to get in the motor home and go where she was taken. Sometimes family and friends would join, and other times would just be her and her husband.

She retired from working for The City of Montgomery. She especially loved her job at the Montgomery Zoo working as a secretary for the director Chuck Clift who was blind. He called her his eyes and she spoke highly of her times driving him around to various locations.

Shirley was a faithful and devoted wife, mother, and friend. She was independent in a way that is nearly unfathomable. She was strong and a fighter, and these facts stood true until the very second she passed.

The family would like to thank the team from Gentiva Hospice who provided experienced comfort care during her last months.

Family and friends will gather at Leak Memory at 12:30 PM on Saturday, July, 28, 2024. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, The Center for Dementia Research, or a charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to invite friends for fellowship at their residence immediately following the service.
