Richard Arledge Ball Jr.

Richard Arledge Ball Jr., resident of Montgomery, Alabama born June 24, 1938 in Montgomery, Alabama died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family Friday morning April 21, 2023. Richard was known for being a well respected lawyer in Montgomery. He was admitted to the Alabama State Bar Association in February 1962, and after two years of service in the Army, he began practicing with his family law firm, formerly known as Ball and Ball, now Ball, Ball, Matthews and Novak. Richard was a past President of the Montgomery County Bar Association and was also a former member of the International Association of Defense Counsel. After graduating from Sidney Lanier High School in 1956, he went on to the University of Alabama where he received his B.A. and L.L.B degrees in 1962. He attended the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General School at the University of Virginia and the Basic Infantry Officers Orientation Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia and was then assigned to Headquarters U.S. Army Europe in Heidelberg, Germany. He was discharged honorably as a Captain. Richard served on the boards of the Montgomery County Bar Association, the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Country Club in which he was a former President, the Lion’s Club, the Pioneers of Montgomery where he was also President, the Montgomery Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Alabama River Region Ballet where he was President. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Delta Phi fraternities at the University of Alabama. He was also a lifelong supporter of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Richard was also a Champion golfer. Winner of the 1956 Alabama High School Golf Championship, he went on to be a member of the University of Alabama golf team. His presence there surely helped shape the future of the team. He was a major contender in every golf tournament he ever played. He never lost his passion for golf and continued to play well into his eighties.

Richard is preceded in death by his father Richard Arledge Ball, Sr. and his mother Mortimer Tuttle Ball.

He is survived by his wife Priscilla Tyler Crommelin Ball, his children Priscilla Crommelin-Monnier McMullan and Charles Crommelin Monnier, his grandchildren John Tyler Arledge Crommelin McMullan, Charles Ross Crommelin-Monnier, and Ashton Rogers Monnier, his brother Fred S. Ball, his niece Catherine Ball Walker, and his grand nephew and niece, Benjamin Edward Walker and Eveylyn Louise Walker. Richard was indeed loved by many and will be missed by all that knew him. He was a great American.

A friends and family visitation for Richard will be Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 10:00 am, followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 am, both held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 113 Madison Ave. Montgomery, AL 36104. Services will conclude with his burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
