Lois Alexander Usrey, of Montgomery, Ala., passed on, Feb. 15, 2022, on her 97th birthday. She
was born, Degloais Alexander, to the late Willie Albert Alexander and the late Dovie Butler
Alexander Lawson, in Winston County, Ala., on Feb. 15, 1925.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clyde W. Usrey, and by her beloved baby
brother, Harold Alexander.
Mrs. Usrey is survived by her children, Betty Lane Carroll, of Montgomery, Ala., Dennis Neal
Scogin (Lois), of College Station, Tex.; and by her grandchildren, Madelaine Gilchrist (Shane),
of Wetumpka, Ala., Debra Bibb (Julian), of Nashville, Tenn., Alex Scogin (Laura), of Buda, Tex.,
Lisa Scogin (Luis Leal), of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Dennis Blackerby (Lynette), of
Wilsonville, Ala., Larisa Blackerby, of Wilsonville, Ala.
She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Tanner and Braxton Gilchrist; Julian, Eliza
Vaughan, Dovie, and Lane Bibb; Lily, John, Ben, Nathan, and Liza Ann Scogin.
Additionally, she is survived by her younger sister, Willie Latane Barton (Elbert), of Wakefield,
Vir., and her nieces and nephew, Marie Carmean, Michael Barton, Shirley Dietz, and Susan
Murray.
She married Clyde W. Usrey on November 25, 1950, in Norfolk, Vir., and they lived in
Montgomery, Ala., where Lois worked as a supervisor in the data processing division of the
Alabama ABC Board until her retirement in 1984. She enjoyed quilting, watching wildlife,
traveling across the United States and to Canada with her husband, and sharing life with her
precious chihuahuas, Tiny and Suzie. She was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church, and
later, Lakeview Baptist Church.
She loved the Lord and knew His great, unwavering love for her. A woman of incredible strength
and independence whose fortitude has been, and will continue to be, an inspiration to the
generations that follow her, Lois (also known as Mother, Sis, Grandmother, Great Granny, and
Aunt Lois) was truly loved more than she could ever know and will be missed more than she
could ever imagine.
The family held a private graveside service at Alabama Heritage Cemetery, in Montgomery, Ala.,
where Lois is laid to rest.
