James Edward Ivey

James Edward Ivey, 88, of Montgomery, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014. Visitation will be Monday, January 6 from 1:00 to 2:00 at Leak-Memory Chapel. The service will follow at 2:00 in the chapel with Rev. Ashley Davis and Rev. Forrest Weekley officiating. James was preceded in death by his parents, Moses Lafatte Ivey and Ida Marie Garner of Graceville, Florida; J. D. Ivey of Washington state; and Gearldine Ivey of Graceville, Florida. He was known for his love of the Lord, devotion to family and friends, a servant spirit, and strong work ethic. He was considered the patriarch of his family and was loved and admired by all. He worked for Winn-Dixie for 45 years as meat market and seafood manager. His career brought him to Montgomery in 1965 when he opened the Dalraida Winn-Dixie store. He also opened both Eastdale Winn-Dixie locations and the Promenade location. He was a devoted member of Wallsboro United Methodist Church where he faithfully served as church treasurer for many years. He was very proud of his service in the Navy during World War II and could always be seen proudly wearing his World War II Veteran cap anytime he was around Montgomery. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Florence Murrell Holman Ivey of Montgomery, Alabama; loving daughter, Sandra Powell of Montgomery, Alabama; son-in-law, Terry Powell of Montgomery, Alabama; devoted grandson, Cody Powell of Montgomery, Alabama; two sisters, Gladys Strickland of Marianna, Florida and Sybil (George) Jones of Jackson, Alabama; one brother, Billy Ray (Peggy) Elmore of Lilburn, Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many close friends and neighbors.
