He attended Starks Military Academy during his formative school years. Upon graduation, he entered the Air Force in August of 1949. During his Air Force career, he served overseas in Alaska, Turkey and Korea as a communication specialist. He retired from Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland in 1969. After returning to Montgomery, he began a second career as a Security and Safety Police Officer with Auburn University (Montgomery). He retired in 1994.
Jim’s favorite pastime was entertaining and boating on Lake Martin. He was an avid follower of Auburn football for decades. He was a voracious reader and loved conversing about anything that had to do with History. Jim was a long time member of Dalraida Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Opal Harris of 37 years; two daughters, Joyce Barnes (Jerry) of Huntsville, and Janet Dean (Bruce) of Hope Hull, step-daughter Carol McDaniel (Ron) of Tallassee, step-son Stan Ingram (Shannon) of Augusta, Ga. He has 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Barnes, Byron Barnes, Austin Barnes, Scott Dean, Craig McDaniel, and Kristian Livas.
Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery, AL, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery off Air Base Boulevard.
