George Armond Landry

On the morning of January 12, 2024, George A. Landry, a Local Legend, passed away at the age of 93. At the time of his passing, he was at home surrounded by loved ones. George was born in Nashua, NH, and raised in the Plattsburgh, NY area. He enlisted in the US Air Force and served over 20 years, both stateside and overseas. But he is best known for his music. He had lived in the Montgomery area for the last 50 years, and was quite involved in the local music scene. He was most famous for his work in radio (WCOV/WACV) and his local radio show “Landry in the Nighttime: The Music You Thought You’d Never Hear Again”. He felt it was his duty to act as Montgomery’s chief proponent of the big band sound. But he could also be seen in many of the area’s restaurants and lounges. If you were at a wedding, private party, or reunion, he might have been there, too, playing cuts off his large and prized record collection (over 1000 vinyl albums, and 500 CDs). He could also be seen around town playing piano or guitar; either solo or in a group. He always loved the music, and loved what he did. As a local Master of Ceremonies, he was involved in all aspects of keeping the Big Band genre alive. He had interviewed many of the greats in the music business, including Frankie Lane, Lawrence Welk, Jo Stafford, Tony Bennett and the Jackson Five (the latter while stationed at Hickam AFB in Hawaii).

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elaine Nelson Landry, and his five children, Robert Landry (Annette) of Boulder City, NV; Cindy Heufel (John), of Montgomery; Michael Landry (Dee), of Prescott, AZ; Richard Landry (Lynne), of Titus, AL; and Kathy Madaris (Terry) of Montgomery. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their appreciation to Tori Hardy and Chanda Crawford for their loving care of “Mr. George.” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Bede Catholic Church or Dalraida Baptist Church, both located in Montgomery.

His celebration of life will be held Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL. Visitation is 1-2 pm, with service to follow at 2. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
