Dr. Gary Phillips went home on August 29, 2021. He was born November 15, 1938 in Enterprise, Alabama the son of Daniel and Annie Merle Phillips. He grew up in Dothan, Alabama and graduated from Dothan High School in 1957. He was a starting lineman for the University of Alabama in 1958, 1959, and 1960 on the first teams for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
He attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine where he also
completed his orthopedic residency. After completing his residency he entered the Air Force during the Vietnam war.
After the war he practiced orthopedics for many years in Montgomery before retirement. He performed the first arthroscopic surgery in Montgomery, was instrumental in
starting the Montgomery Surgical Center and helped establish the first physical therapy group in Montgomery. Dr. Phillips loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and Alabama football.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Lou Ellen, 3 sons and their wives Matt (Camille), Will (Trecia) and Clay (Carrie), 12 grandchildren, a brother Kenneth Phillips and his family, precious nieces and nephews and extended family who he loved and the wonderful Poundstone Sunday School class at First Baptist Church. Even with his many successes he will be most remembered by his family as a man of integrity, a faithful husband, a loving father, an uncommonly generous man, a man of great perseverance, the definition of southern masculinity and a man with unwavering sincere faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A celebration of his life will be Thursday 9/9/21 at 3:30pm at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the main sanctuary. It will also be live-streamed on Facebook.
