Frances Shaw Barnes, MD was born May 23, 1922, in Oxford, MS, the fourth child of Dr. and Mrs. O.A. Shaw. She was an honor graduate of University High School in Oxford and graduated cum laude from the University of Mississippi at age 19 with a BS degree. She attended the two year medical school in Oxford, MS and completed an MD degree from George Washington School of Medicine in 1945. She served an internship at Gallanger Hospital, Washington, D.C. and residency in pediatrics at Childrens Hospital, Washington D.C. and Grady Hospital, Atlanta, GA, where she was the first female pediatric resident. She was pediatrician for mental hospitals regional to Minneapolis, MN, 1950 – 1951 and pediatrician for the Shelby County Health Department, Memphis, TN 1954 – 1959 and was in private practice of pediatrics Jackson Hospital, Montgomery, AL 1960 – 1970. She was pediatrician for the Montgomery County and Lowndes County Health Departments 1970 – 1984. Her marriage to Z.B. Barnes, MD, FACS lasted for 62½ years. She died at age 90 in Jackson Hospital, Montgomery, AL on August 8, 2012. Frances is survived by husband, Dr. Z. B. Barnes; daughters, Beryl (Bob) Ierardi and Roxanne Barnes of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren: Drew (Jen) Ierardi, Paige (Erik) Ierardi Johnson and Annie Ierardi; one great grandchild, Julian Shaw Ierardi; and sister Katheryn Shaw Dowd of Chehalis, WA. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Frances’ life at White Chapel Funeral Home at 3pm on Saturday, August 11, 2012.
