Emily Jean Cain

Emily Jean Cain, "known as Jeanne," was born August 13, 1932, in Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota, and passed away peacefully at home in Montgomery, Alabama, on November 14, 2023. Jeanne was the youngest daughter of Emil and Mary Alice Dumcke. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Orein, Florence, and Lillian, and brother, George.

Jeanne met her husband, Garland Cain, from Mexia, Texas, in 1954 on a blind date, and they married a year later. Jeanne and Garland often remarked that a boy from Texas driving all the way across the US to meet and marry a girl from Wyoming must have been the Lord's doing. Jeanne and Garland began their journey, and throughout their 60-year marriage, they lived in eleven different cities and six states. They had their three sons and one daughter in tow for twenty-plus years. They spent twenty years in New Orleans and then retired to Leesburg and Mount Dora, Florida, for another twenty years.

As a young mother, Jeanne was busy with four rambunctious kids; Jeanne was a teacher, banker, baker, chef, chauffeur, storyteller, spy, referee, and lawyer when needed. Jeanne was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Leesburg, Florida, when she and Garland lived there.

Jeanne treasured her Hunter Hills Church of Christ family for the past six years. She loved to sing, with her bright blue eyes and enduring smile, and was a friend to all she met. Jeanne loved sending cards and a little cash to her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was funny, courageous, strong, intelligent, and loving. These traits live on through her children and grandchildren.

Her beloved husband, Garland, passed away in 2016. Survivors include their sons, Mark (Shari) Cain of Utah, David (Karla) Cain of Missouri, and Greg (Karen) Cain of Texas; daughter Candace Cain (her roommate for the last six years ); grandchildren: Cody, Ashlee, Katie, Megan, Kylie, Mabrie, Sherri, Kelly, and Kristen; 20 great-grandchildren as well as other loving extended families.

Visitation will be at 10:00 am and her Funeral service at 11:00 am on November 18, 2023, at White Chapel - Greenwood Cemetery, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama. For those who wish, instead of flowers, donations may go to Hope House Montgomery at www.hopehousemontgomery.org.
