Dick E. Merritt, 68, a resident of Wetumpka, Alabama passed away on Friday, July 19, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Leak-Memory Chapel on Tuesday, July 23 at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Dr. Rick Marshall and The Reverend Larry Armstrong. The family will receive friends at Leak-Memory one hour prior to the service. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Greenwood Cemetery following the service.
Dick graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia, in 1963 and from Auburn University in 1968. He retired from Auburn University at Montgomery as Director of Housing and Residence Life after 25 years of service in 2003.
Dick was an active member of Eastern Hills Baptist church and served in many capacities over the last 23 years. He loved the Lord and he adored his family. Dick was a loving husband and doting father (“Best Daddy”).
Dick is survived by his wife of 32 years, Melody; his daughter, Julie Merritt (“Best Girl”) and his brother David (Carole) and mother-in-law Adella Esco. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Lee and Entice Merritt and his father-in-law Allen M. Esco.
Active pall bearers include Danny Esco, Eric Esco, Wesley Milam, Happy Fulford, Don Meadows, and Steve Sprayberry. Honorary pall bearers are members of the Eastern Hills Baptist Church Johnson Sunday School Class. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Elmore County Humane Society or Eastern Hills Baptist Church Youth Choir.
