Born on April 30, 1949, in Montgomery, Daniel dedicated his life to serving others, working as an accountant for the State of Alabama for 45 years. In recent years, he continued to give back to his community by working part-time with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Daniel’s greatest joys came from simple moments—playing a round of golf, cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events, and spending meaningful time with his family. He was a steady, loving presence whose kindness and quiet strength left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
He is survived by his children: Christina and Billy Russell and their sons Caleb and Brennan; Carlyn and Robbie Duncan and their twins Tripp and Ella Harper; Chad and Mendi Vandervort and their children Gray, Ebbi, and AnnaClaire; Cadyn and John Craik and their daughter Hailyn and her son Daniel Watson; and Cameron and Weston Thomas and their children Lakyn, Maddie Jane Thomas, and Owen. He is also survived by his former wife, Sharion Whitlock Vandervort; his stepmother, Mickie Hurst Vandervort; his sister Debbie and her husband John Dorough; and many extended family members and friends who loved him deeply.
Daniel was preceded in death by his father, Owen Vandervort; his mother, Ruth Vandervort; and his brother, David Vandervort.
Papa Dan, which is how he was known by those who love him most, will be remembered for his gentle spirit, funny sense of humor, his deep devotion to his family, and his unwavering faith. He is now at peace in the presence of the Lord he loved
A Celebration of Life Chapel Service will be held on Thursday 11 AM with a Family and Friends visitation one hour prior to service. A Graveside Committal service will be held immediately following in Greenwood Cemetery.
