Anne Durr Palmer, 97, died peacefully on January 1st, 2024. Born July 26, 1926, to Annie Paul and John Wesley Durr, she grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. In her early years, Anne enjoyed summers spent with cousins, dancing (she always wanted to be a Rockette!), and singing along while her brother played his guitar. She attended Huntingdon College and made lifelong friendships. In later life, she was active in both the Junior League and volunteer work, and she loved hosting parties. Anne especially enjoyed new adventures with her family, including camping while in her 60s, “hiking” in Yellowstone for her 80th, and riding a motorcycle at the age of 90.
Anne met her husband, Howard, at a family gathering, and they married in 1954. They lived in New York City, where Howard was a lawyer. His job took them overseas to the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, and they enjoyed traveling worldwide. They moved back to the States, finally retiring to Montgomery. In later years, Anne lived in Tennessee and Oklahoma, to be near her daughters and their families.
Survivors include her daughters, Joanne Wood (Bob) and Beverley Palmer of Signal Mountain, Tennessee; and Margaret Carroll (Dave) of Stillwater, Oklahoma; her brother, John W. Durr (Mary Anne) of Montgomery, Alabama; 6 grandchildren, Laura Wood, David Wood (Sammie), Bridget Carroll, William Carroll (Izzie), Nathan Carroll and Emily Carroll; and 2 “greats” (Owen and Beckett Carroll).
A private graveside service will be held in Montgomery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Karmen Legacy Hospice in Stillwater, Oklahoma, or St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
