He was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on August 3, 1943. He graduated from Huntingdon College in 1967 before entering the United States Army. After serving 26 years in Logistics, he retired from the military in 1994. During his military service, he was in the 375th Army Depot and was awarded several medals including the Army Commendation Medal. He was also commander of the Logistics Unit in Opelika, Alabama. He was also president of Automotive Paint and Supply Company in Montgomery, Alabama.
Dan was known for his kind, giving spirit. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the lake and beach. He was a long-time member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Montgomery, Alabama. He served on the missions team and other projects.
He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Lynn Broadway Fitzgerald; his two daughters, Dana Fitzgerald Battiste (Shaun) of Chelsea, AL and Mary Fitzgerald of Spring Hill, TN; twin granddaughters that he affectionately called his "Little Nips", Addison and Ryleigh Battiste of Chelsea, AL; two brothers, Darryl Fitzgerald (Debra) and Stanley Fitzgerald (Jeannie). He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nadie Fitzgerald; sister, Angela Foster; and brother, David Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald family expresses their deepest gratitude for the care provided by Aveanna Hospice and personal care assistants, Lecretia Washington and Tamelia Roberson.
A graveside service will be held Friday, November 3, 2023 at 9:30 AM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, Alabama 35115. Following the graveside service will be a Celebration of Life with refreshments from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Rockco Funeral Home, 3715 Highway 25, Montevallo, Alabama 35115.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Missions Team of Montgomery, Alabama or your preferred charity.
