Warren L. Hammond Jr., age 87, peacefully passed away at his home on June 11th following a brief illness. Born on December 12, 1935, Warren graduated from Murphy High School and received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Alabama where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Between college and law school, he served four years as an Air Intelligence Officer and Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy earning the rank of Lieutenant. Warren loved sharing stories about his Navy days including the nine months he lived on the USS Shangri-La, and he was a lifetime member of the Tailhook Association.
In 1970, he married Carolyn Gwin Hammond and they had two daughters - Gwin and Katie. He spent the first half of his legal career as a partner at Conrad, Hammond & Barlar. During that time, he was involved in several legal organizations and was a past president of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association. In 1997, he was appointed as a United States Administrative Law Judge which he thoroughly enjoyed until his retirement in December 2019 – just one day after his 84th birthday.
Warren had no shortage of hobbies and was very involved in the Mobile community. He was a founder and the banjo player in the Royal Street Seven Dixieland Band which played throughout the Southeast for over 20 years; past president of the Mobile Lions Club, Mobile Jazz Society and Alba Fishing and Hunting Club; and board member of the Chandler Branch YMCA and Mercy Medical Hospice. He was an active member of the Infant Mystics and Comic Cowboys for many years, and on any given weekend you could find him riding around or fishing on his beloved boat, practicing his target shooting, watching Alabama football, playing golf or tinkering with something in his workshop. Warren was also an avid non-fiction history reader and subscribed to nearly every magazine still in print.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Warren "Bill" and Savelle Hammond; his sister, Gene Ballard; and his beloved daughter, Katie Hammond. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Gwin Hammond; his daughter, Gwin Hammond; nieces, Stephanie Beacham and Ginger Tarbet; and nephew, T.K. Gwin. He also leaves his chosen family of lifelong friends who will keep his spirit alive by raising a glass in his honor and continuing to tell the stories that he loved to share.
A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 20th at 2:30pm followed by a visitation in the reception hall. His ashes will be interred at Spring Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Warren's name can be made to the charity of your choice.
