Thomas Webster Hewitt

Survived by his wife of 55 years Sheri Dobler Hewitt, son Thomas Bartholomew (Bart) Hewitt, (Karissa McCoy), daughter Margaret (Meg) Elizabeth Caldwell( Bryan), daughter. Grandchildren, Braeden Caldwell, Killoren Caldwell, Moira Hewitt.

Nieces: Susan Hunt (Jon Rutschky), Beth Claypoole, (Jeff) Dianne Hunt(Rick, deceased), Shelley Johnson(Rob), Nephews: Steven Hunt(Lynn), Jay Hodges(Neva) , Will Frandsen (deceased)and many great nephews.

He graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA in History, served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant and went overseas during the Berlin Wall Crisis. Upon discharge, he went back to WMU to complete his Masters. Tom taught High School History in Sturgis, MI and following that taught at Oakland Community College.

He met his wife on a substitute blind date in Detroit. A long story.. after marriage he attended and received his Doctorate from the University of Houston and worked at a nonprofit Character Education project in San Antonio TX. From there he taught at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. He ran Teacher Corp projects and taught curriculum education. His career then brought him to University of South Alabama where he served as President of the Faculty Senate, and Department Chair of Education.

He was on the Board of then Mobile Area Food Bank, President of the Board of the Mobile Daycare Association and ran the Childcare Worker Training Program.

He was an excellent grant writer, teacher, and mentor. Upon is retirement he wrote a textbook on curriculum as he knew there was not one on this subject. It is still being used by some today.

Tom was an avid gardener, reader, bird watcher, grill master and punster. He loved his family fiercely and was a loyal brother and friend. Travel was always on his calendar and there were two cruises booked in the next year. Tom and Sheri traveled the world together and even liked long road trips.

Tom belonged to the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and two mystic societies. He was a lifelong Episcopal Church member and attended All Saints in Mobile where he was a past vestry person along with singing in the adult choir for 30+years with his wife, Sheri.

A Celebration of life service will be held, Dec. 30, 2023 at 10 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church with a Reception to follow.
