Julia Rebecca Phillips Bradley, 96, of Mobile, Alabama, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, while at home surrounded by her loving family, on February 23, 2024. Julia was born November 16, 1927 in Boaz, Alabama.
She graduated from Boaz High School in 1945, earned an A.S. in Home Economics from West Georgia College in 1946, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950 with a B.S. in Clothing and Textiles, and received a M.A. in Education from the University of South Alabama in 1982. Upon graduation from “The University'' (Alabama), Julia served as Assistant Home Demonstration Agent for Hale County, Alabama and later Home Demonstration Agent for Marengo County, Alabama. She married Chester A. “C.A” Bradley, Jr. of Greensboro, Alabama and they made their home in Mobile. Julia was employed in Mobile as a buyer for The Vanity, a women’s clothing store.
After the birth of her two sons, Chet and George, Julia enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother, making a wonderful, Christian home for her family. She was involved in various areas of volunteer work including membership in University Women, Westlawn Elementary School where her two boys attended, and as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher at Dauphin Way Baptist Church.
Julia was an accomplished seamstress and upholsterer which she enjoyed as a hobby. She also took pleasure in creating costumes for her sons’ and grandson’s school plays and activities. She was an excellent cook and found joy entertaining her family by setting a beautiful dinner table filled with delicious food, which was often followed with board games and always lots of laughter.
The family moved to Springhill, Louisiana in 1968 when her husband, C.A., was transferred with International Paper Company. Following her husband's death, Julia began teaching school in Bradley, Arkansas where she taught for several years, before returning to Mobile, where she taught 4th grade at Westlawn Elementary School until her retirement.
Immediately following her retirement, Julia enjoyed volunteering as a docent at Oakleigh Plantation Home guiding tours. She also was involved in the Grandma’s Attic Program, where she visited local elementary schools in historic costume and shared historical artifacts from Oakleigh Plantation with school children.
She was a loving mother and grandmother. Her greatest gift was her Christian example and witness to her friends and family. She was a member of Spring Hill Avenue United Methodist Church where she served in various missions. She also enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and hosting bridge club. She was an avid Alabama football fan.
She is predeceased by her husband, Chester A. “C.A.” Bradley, Jr., her parents, George Dewey Phillips and Monte Mae Tolbert Phillips, her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Phillips Hulgan and Hoyle Hulgan, and brother-in-law, Bobby Roberts.
Those left to cherish her memory are sons, Chester A. “Chet” Bradley, III and wife Alana, and George Philip Bradley, grandson, Chester A. “Cab” Bradley, IV and wife Charlee, and sister, Georgia Kathleen Phillips Roberts.
A family graveside service will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
