Joseph W. "Jay" Green II

Joseph W. Green II, known to everyone as Jay, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile passed away Monday, March 2nd after a brief illness. Jay was a graduate of Murphy High School in the midyear class of 1941. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) where he lettered in cross country and track. He wrote for the Auburn Plainsman and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He graduated with a BS in Chemistry. Jay served honorably in the United States Army in World War II and in the Korean War in Military Intelligence. He later commanded the 411th Military Intelligence Unit in the Army Reserves and retired after 20 plus years as a Lt. Colonel. After the Korean War, he returned to Mobile and worked for 33 years at Courtaulds North America. Before retiring, he served as Secretary of the Executive Committee and as Sales Service Manager. He was active his entire life and had many interests. He was involved with Joe Jefferson Players as an actor and member of the Board of Directors. He served as President and contributed both backstage as well as onstage. He danced with the Mobile Ballet in the Nutcracker and Coppelia. He was a member of a local mystic society. In recent years, he was proud to serve as a volunteer with the SCORE Program with the Mobile Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid golfer and ballroom dancer. He was active in Masters Swimming Competition for many years and kept swimming until the age of 90. He was married to Peggy Strange Green for 55 years until her death in 2002. He is survived by his two children, Kay Kay Green of Mobile and Brad Green and wife Cathy Green of Kinston Springs, TN. He is also survived by his sister, Edna Bourgot of Mobile, his brother, Carey Green and wife Barbara of Silverton CO, sister-in-law, Nancy Strange of Mobile, and many cousins, nephews, and nieces, and his special friend, Betty Smitherman. A memorial service will be held from Springhill Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 12 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Wednesday, March 4, from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joe Jefferson Players, P.O.
