John Newburn “Pete” Smyth – an 87 year-old lifelong resident of Mobile passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012. Mr. Smyth was a World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He retired from International Paper in 1986 after many years of service as an electrician. Mr. Smyth was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Smyth and Colleen A. Weaver Smyth; son, John Grady Smyth; grandson, Nicholas Thor Markow; and four brothers, Howard, Lamar, Fred, and James Allen Smyth. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Flynn Smyth; daughter, Gail S. Markow; and grandchildren, Shelby Markow and John Connor Markow. Graveside services will be held in Mobile Memorial Gardens on Monday, December 31, 2012, at 9 a.m. The family will receive friends at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Sunday, December 30, from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fulton Road Baptist Church, 1800 Dauphin Island Pkwy., Mobile, AL 36605 or to a charity of your choice.
