John Henry Payne was born on March 14, 1950 in Louisville, KY. He received a BBA in Business Administration from the University of Kentucky in 1973, an MPA in Public Administration from USA in 1982, and a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from USA in 1997.
He began his working career as a Claims Representative from SSA and was an Operations Supervisor when he left the agency in 1996. He began his vocational rehabilitation career in 1997 with Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. He was serving as a senior rehabilitation counselor for ADRS until his death on July 6, 2024.
John had a passion for helping others and served on the Board of the Society of St. Vincent DePaul District Council of Mobile for many years and was past member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Little Flower Parish and faithfully attended Mass.
John loved sports of all kinds. “Go Big Blue” was his favorite cheer and Roll Tide was a close second. He also was proud to be a Jaguar Alumnus and was a season ticket holder for football and basketball. He was also an animal lover and his current pets are Cassidy and Scizzy; both adopted from a local animal shelter.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Leona Payne, and by his only sibling, Anthony (Tony) Payne. He is survived by his cousin, Carolyn Bickett (John), and many friends too numerous to name.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church in Mobile, with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Little Flower Catholic Church or the Mitchell Cancer Center.
