James L. Mason, Jr. died peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 2, 2022, surrounded by his loving family – all life-long residents of Mobile, Alabama. Jim’s favorite place was at the Mullet Point Family Bay House. He had loving parents, James Sr. and Lucy Jeannette Mason, and spent his summers on or in Mobile Bay. He’d owned a boat since he was 10 years old, and he always said his childhood was magical. He loved a good joke, and laughed often, even through difficult times.
While Jim was working as the Assistant City Clerk of Mobile, his interest in city and county politics evolved, and he decided to run for public office as County Commissioner. He served with honesty and integrity for two consecutive terms. His door was always open for everyone – and he loved working with people of all walks of life – treating everyone with equality, dignity, and respect. Jim’s life was well-lived.
Jim is survived by his childhood sweetheart, and loving wife of 60 years, Mary Ann Mason; son, James Francis Mason; daughter-in-law, Christina Mason; the light of his life: his granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Mason; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty Jean” Mason, VT and Catherine Ann Mason Pridgen, Mobile, AL; cousin, Linda Konstanzer, Fairhope, AL; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Kindred Hospice Staff, who were so wonderful and supportive in their time of need – no words can convey the appreciation of your help and support.
Visitation for Jim will be from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway, with a Celebration of Life service immediately following. The family asks that you join them for a reception after the Celebration of Life, to share your fondest memories of Jim.
