Fred Earl Varnes Jr. “Freddie”, age 72, passed this life while surrounded by the prayers of thousands on January 29, 2021, at Providence Hospital.
Freddie was a native son of Mobile, Alabama.
Freddie was born at 28 weeks in 1948 and was not expected to survive, much less to live the long life that he did on this earth.
With the dedication of a devoted loving Mother, he overcame cerebral palsy issues to live a very contented life filled with family, and enumerable friends.
Freddie was educated in the Mobile County Public School System.
Freddie loved and belonged to the Lord and cherished his family and his countless friends.
He loved music and was and accomplished musician on keyboards, drums, and harmonica. He had perfect pitch.
Freddie was also an aspiring ventriloquist and DJ and performed for many charities in the local area.
Freddie was a fixture in the Gulf Manor subdivision of NAVCO from the 1950’s through the 1990’s when he moved to a VOA managed independent living apartment. He lived independently there until his passing. In 2015, Freddie was awarded a plaque declaring him “The Goodwill Ambassador to NAVCO” at a NAVCO reunion.
He loved going to Camp ASCA every year and he looked forward the Holidays and his birthday.
If you ever got to meet Freddie, he wasn’t easily forgotten, and he never forgot you.
Freddie is survived by his Brother, Steven C. Varnes (Glenda), of Mobile, AL; his brother, Robert E. Varnes , of Texas; and his two sisters, Annette Weaver and Lynda Cantrell of Washington State.
He is preceded in death by his loving Mother, Marie L. Varnes, “Jo” and his Father, Fred Earl Varnes, ”Doc”.
Visitation and Interment shall be at Pinecrest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile AL
Visitation shall start at 11:00AM on Thursday February followed by a graveside at 1:00PM.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Freddie’s life.
The family would like to thank Carolyn Weaver for being an unfailing friend to Freddie over the years.
We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Nycole Jordan for looking after Freddie during the course of his residence within the VOA managed community and in particular for her personal interest and passion for all her residents. She is real hero.
