Dorothy was born in Mobile, AL, to Carl “Charles” Haustein and Corilla “Lily” Favier Haustein. She graduated from Murphy High School and attended the University of Alabama where she met her husband-to-be. In 1948, she married Thomas A. Rose, Jr., of Fayette, AL. They lived and raised their family in Mobile.
She had a rich life filled with caring for her family and working in the visual arts. Her artwork was seen in the 1970s and 1980s in single artist shows in various banks and the former International Trade Center in Mobile. She created the covers for several Port of Mobile magazines and seasonal advertisements for Gayfers and Delchamps for the Mobile Press Register. She painted murals in McGill-Toolen High School and St. Mary School, as well as repaired numerous statues in several Catholic churches in Mobile.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas A. Rose, Jr., her parents and brother, Carl Haustein, Jr. She is survived by children Angela Patrick (Larry) of Mobile, Thomas A. Rose,III (Charlene) of Fairhope; Anthony C. Rose (Shelley) of Mobile; Elizabeth ”Betsy” Holley Boshell (Tim) of Mobile; Joseph V. Rose (Kara) of Daphne; sister-n-law Eva B. Haustein and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy‘s parents were from St. Louis, MO. Her father was the Chief Draftsman for the GM&O Railroad in Mobile for 47 years, and he was also a fine artist, whose works included portraits, landscapes, and Christmas cards. Her mother was devoted to her family, was a homemaker and did beautiful seamstress work; she was a joy. Traveling to St. Louis by railway to visit relatives was a special delight for Dorothy.
Dottie attended Leinkauf School, Barton Academy and Murphy High, where she was active in the Art Department, a member of the Art Honor Society, and in the choir.
She attended the University of Alabama for one year, excelling in art. There she met her husband, Tom, who was also enrolled in art classes. He was from Fayette, AL, played high school football and served in the Navy. Dottie and Tom married in 1948. They raised 5 children, who now live in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. She generously helped care for her many grandchildren, who knew her as GhiGhi. She had a child-like joy that was demonstrated in her play with her children and grandchildren. There was drawing on the chalk board, roller skating, hide and seek, and so much more. She loved music, singing and dancing, especially tap.
Dorothy had a number of Art Exhibits in the 1970s and 80s, including Children of the World. She received recognition in the local newspaper several times and a lovely letter from a Russian ship captain, who saw the exhibit at the former International Trade Center. She designed several covers for the “Port of Mobile”, an Alabama State Docks Publication, in the 70s.
She has done art work for St. Mary Parish, St. Pius and McGill High School (now McGill-Toolen) and the Mobile Theater Guild. She restored statues at St. Mary, Little Flower and St. Joan of Arc; and painted murals at St. Mary School and McGill High School.
In 2001 she and daughter, Angela, went on a 7 country, 15 day whirl-wind tour of Northern Europe. She loved it. She especially enjoyed the Cathedrals and mountains, reaching the summit of one in Switzerland.
She was a graduate of the Mobile Police Department Citizen’s Academy Class #3 in 2003.
Her qualities of resilience, tenacity, resourcefulness, creativity and sense of fun will be long-felt and appreciated by all who knew her well.
