Charlton Dukes Harris, a native and ninety year resident of Mobile, passed away in his sleep on August 17, 2020, in Atlanta, GA. Born on Sept 19, 1926, in the Mobile Infirmary, he graduated from Murphy High School and went on to The University of Alabama where he was in Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and majored in business administration. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC, and was to be deployed as the war ended.
Charlton began his career at American National Bank and later moved into real estate sales at Thames Jackson Harris. He worked many years and retired as a real estate appraiser for Mobile County. Charlton had a passion for the outdoors. He raced sailboats in Mobile Bay and the Gulf, fished and hunted doves, ducks, and deer. He also carved life-like duck decoys that won awards in competitions.
He was a devoted, life-long member of Government Street Presbyterian Church following several generations of Harris' in service and volunteering. When he retired, he enjoyed breakfast with two different men's groups every Saturday.
Charlton was the son of the late Ellen and George Harris of Mobile. His brother, George Harris, Jr. predeceased him, as did his wife of 55 years, Sarah Norris Harris and a infant child Sarah. He remarried and was widowed again. He moved to Atlanta to be with his only child, Ellen Harris Chastain, son-in-law Eric Chastain, and 2 grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Wesley and Hannah Chastain.
Visitation will be at Radney Funeral Home 3155 Dauphin St. Saturday, August 22, 2020, from 12-1:00 pm, and a graveside service open to everyone at Magnolia Cemetery 1202 Virginia St at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Government Street Presbyterian Church 300 Government Street Mobile, AL 36602
