It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Betty Joyce Sumrall, a 84 year old resident of Mobile, AL, who passed away on January 15, 2023, surrounded by those she cherished more than life itself.
Betty was born and raised in Tanner Williams, AL by her parents Reverend J. B. Motley and Carolyn Nancy Motley.
She would soon move to Mobile, where she worked at Woolworth’s Department store and married the love of her life. Betty married Mobile native Jack Donald Sumrall on April 10, 1959; where their pursuit of “happily ever after” would give them their first and only child, Tiia Darlene Bush on October 6, 1968.
Betty cherished family above all and cared for her late husband through several bouts of cancer and heart conditions truly defining “til death do us part.”
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Sarah Shirley, Maxine Richardson, Louise Orse, Miriam Vann, Mary Middleton, and her loving husband. She is survived by her daughter Tiia Bush, grandchildren Daniel Bush Jr. (LeighAnne Bush), Jonathan Bush (Josie Bush), Brittany Ann Bush, and great grandchildren Daniel (Tre) Bush III, Jack Solomon Bush, soon to be Jon Michael Bush, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family.
Visitation for Betty will be held from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
Betty and Jack were lovers of all people and were advocates in the pursuit to fight cancer. The family kindly request in lieu of flowers to make donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
