Autry Greer Megginson, MD died peacefully on November 10, 2023. Greer was born on December 29, 1937 in Mobile Alabama. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1956, the University of Alabama in 1960 and the University of Alabama Medical School in 1965. He continued his training in urology at UAB serving as chief resident in 1969. Greer returned to Mobile in 1970 and practiced at Urology Associates for forty-eight years until he retired in 2018. He loved practicing medicine, his patients and the whole medical community. He served as chief of staff at the Mobile Infirmary in 1980. Greer was a lifelong member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church where he served as a usher and on numerous committees. He was happiest with surrounded by family at his home on Mobile Bay where they spent many happy years. The centerpiece of Greer’s life was his beloved wife Sally who he lost earlier this year after 63 years of marriage. Greer and Sally had three daughters, Sara, Missy and Greer who were their true joy in life. Greer is preceded in death by his wife Sally, parents Alice Greer Megginson and John Stanley Megginson, his sister Vidmer Downing, brother John Stanley Megginson, Jr. and niece Louise Oswalt. Greer is survived by his daughters Sara Jane Megginson Holt (Bob), Missy Megginson Cunningham (Randle), and Greer Megginson Helmsing (Fred), eight grandchildren: Ali McDonald, Andrew McDonald, Troup R. Cunningham, III (Mason), John Wallace Cunningham (Flavia), Greer Bradley (Connor), Sara Margaret Helmsing, Frederick G. Helmsing, III, and Joseph G. Helmsing, and two great grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Betty Jean Megginson and niece and nephews. The family would like to thank, in particular, Thomas Marsh, Mittie Binion and Sarah Hinkle as well as the staff at Mittie’s Caregivers for taking care of Greer over the last several years. Honorary pallbearers are the physicians at Urology Associates, the members of Greer’s Sunday School class and members of their supper club. Visitation to be held at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church on Tuesday November 14, 2023 at 2:00, followed by a service at 3:00. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama 36604.
