Agnes Maeburke Knox

Agnes Knox, affectionately known as Maeburke, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family September 14, 2023. She was 97 years old. Agnes was born on March 13, 1926, in Mobile Alabama. She was third of 6 children to the union of Vivian and Vera Jackson.

Agnes’ marriage to Quinton Knox, Sr. resulted in a family of 5 children. Agnes prided herself in wearing the hat of a stay-at-home mom and the fact that her husband did not want her to work outside the home, but rather stay at home and cater to the needs of the household and rearing of their children.

Agnes was born and christened Catholic, but became a devout member of the Seventh Day Adventist faith in 1949 and remained a member of that faith throughout her life. Agnes was an active member of her church, serving in several capacities i.e. Sabbath School Superintendent and teacher as well as a member of the Dorcas Society and Chancellor Choir.

Agnes eagerly rendered voluntary services in the community to help make it a better place for children as well as adult disabled individuals. She also worked as a poll watcher for many years. Wherever she labored, she never hesitated to witness for the Lord. In all her hardships in life, she trusted God and acknowledged him in all her ways. In essence, Agnes never lost her hope, her joy, her faith, but most of all, she never lost her praise!

Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Quinton Knox, Sr.; her parents, Vivian and Vera Jackson; one son, Ellie De’Porres Mason; 1 sister, Evelyn Carl; 3 brothers, Herbert, Vivian and Leslie Jackson; and 3 sons-in-law, Wallace Carter, George McKinney, Jr., and Jesse Watkins.

She leaves a legacy of 6 children: devoted daughter and caregiver, Jonne’ Carter of Spanish Fort, AL; Agnes Juanita Thompson-Mitchell of Bay St. Louis, MS; Ida Paulette Knox-Watkins of Daphne, AL; Quinton (Marion) Knox, Jr. of Pensacola, FL; Maxine (Harold) Johnson of Daphne, AL; and Stephenia (Robert) Cook of Spanish Fort, AL; one sister, Dorothy (Clovice) Lewis of Fresno, CA; one sister- in-law, Mary Jackson of Birmingham, AL; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-children; 8 great-great grandchildren; 4 goddaughters one devoted, Senator Vivian Figures, Patrice Johnson-Anthony, Lynn Owens and Laurina Parker; one devoted nephew, Dr. Levy H. Knox; and a host of nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service for Agnes will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Emmanuel SDA Church, at 2:00 pm, preceded by public vistitation at 1:00 pm. A repast will be held immediately following interment at Emmanuel SDA Church, 2000 N Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Mobile, AL 36605. The final and sacred arrangements of Agnes have been entrusted to Pine Crest Funeral Home and Cemeteries, 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy, Mobile, AL 36605.
